Jelly Roll Jam2

I once again worked with one fabulous pattern by Fat Quarter Shop.

This was supposed to go up on last Monday. But I received the fabric on Thursday evening! So I managed to make it in 2 days, while I was down with a stomach-ache.

I ordered the Kona Silent Film Roll-up to make this one.
I also threw in two strips of Botanics Tangerine Branches by Carolyn Friedlander to add a punch!


Here's my Jelly Roll Jam 2!!!

I used Aurifil 1104 (50 wt) to quilt it in my favorite paisley design...

I used a backing that I had bought from a fellow quilter Sudha Sekhar of Madras Motif a few days back.  Isn't it just PERFECT for the quilt? And it shows off my quilting too!

I used a light grey of Calypso in the bobbin and I'm so happy to say that it worked awesome with Aurifil!!! Not a single thread breakage!!! yay! Now my Aurifils will last me longer!!!

Are you admiring my SUPER NEAT stitches??? Thanks to the Bernina Stitch Regulator I am in love with FMQ even more!!!

Getting to know me!!!

I have been tagged in a blog hop by Sharada. She is someone whom I have seen evolving as a crafter over the past few years. We have been following each others' blogs snce what seems like eternity. She is a pro at making anything with paper! She made Aadi's birthday caps and banner for me!!!

I am supposed to tell a few things about myself!

So sit back, take a cup of coffee and hear me talk!!!

Why do I quilt and blog???

Ever since, I discovered quilting, I have been consumed by it. I love the fact that I can do that as a Full Time Job rather than just a hobby.
I started blogging, honestly, because my little brother told me to. And also because I wanted a place where I could share my work with my family and friends. I could put up photos on facebook, but it did not give me the platform to say what went behind making that quilt!

My blog grew along with me. Gradually providing snippets of my life as well. But recently I have once again started focusing on my work here. somehow, talking about myself has taken a back seat!
 but I have always loved this platform where I could talk to my readers and provide them glimpses of whats going on in my life and my studio!

How does my quilting process work?

I have been asked this question so many times that I loose track!
My quilts usually start as one of the 100 sketches I draw - wither in my sketch book or anywhere else. 

 Once I have rummaged through all my stuff and found THE sketch, the process begins. I then raid my stash to find the perfect fabric. This is the part where my sewing room looks like its been hit by a tornado! A lot of fabric is on my table, a lot more is on the floor and very little is left on the shelves!

Then I start cutting! I have always loved my cutting mat by Cutting Edge and my Rotary cutter by Olfa. I use the ergonomic cutter and its better on my wrist than the normal cutter. It is $$ well spent.

After that I get to my sewing machine! Believe me, even though my work is called "Sewing" on a larger scale - I spend the minimum time of a project actually sewing it!

Putting the quilt top together is again, only a small part of the entire process. This is where the basic design of the quilt starts being visible.

Then comes the main part. The actual quilting! This is my favorite part!!! I love how quilting adds character to the quilt.  Quilting is what takes a quilt from here :

On an average, a baby quilt takes about 20 hours to complete and an art quilt like this one could take months!

My Style

I dont think I have a specific style! I have done work that is varying so much that I cannot pin my style!

I have done traditional quilts like the lone star quilt, but I'm sure you can see 'my' touch on it!

I have made some radically out of the box quilts too!

I have made portraits

And then some more

I have made some fiercely modern quilts

and some sensitive ones too...

If I had to sum up my style, I'd say rule breaking! I am a self taught quilter and I just cannot follow instructions! So I have broken many a rules when I made these quilts! And I'm so proud of them!!!

What am I working on?

Right now I have this riot of color that I'm calling Flamboyance on my machine!!!

I am loving it so much!!!

Fat Quarter Fizz!!!

Fat Quarter Shop is launching their new pattern today and I'm so excited to be a part of the event!!!

I was given my choice of a Fat Quarter Bundle to play with and I chose the Kristyne Czepuryk (Pretty by Hand)'s blogger's choice Fat quarter Bundle

It was a beautiful blend of pinks, greys and blues that were not too girly but rather chic and smart.

Here's my finished quilt!!! I loved how easy it was to make this. and I do see myself making many more of these!



I made a baby version of it, with just 3 rows!

I made it entirely in one day - even stitching the binding!!! I just used a zig zag stitch over the fold to give it a neat finish!!!

Nail Polish Quilt ~~~ PLUS BONUS TUTORIAL!!!

I was really excited when Fat Quarter Shop asked me if i was interested in promoting their new Nail Polish Quilt Pattern.

Of course I was!

How could I not be?

It is such a cute pattern!!!

Here's the quilt i made from their pattern!

I have a hard time following patterns!!! But this one was fun! Not until I finished it did I realize I have made it a mirror image of what it should have been! Doesn't change it at all though!!!

The instructions were super easy to follow and FQS even has a video tutorial to help you!!!

Fabric Requirements:
From Caribbean fabric (SKU#9900-86) cut
A - 2 - 14.5" x 2.5"
B - 2 - 2.5" x 18.5"
C - 2 - 2" x 4.5"
D - 2- 1.5" x 2"
E - 2 - 3" x 6.5"
F - 2 - 4" x 6.5"
G - 1 - 4" x 3"

From the Black Fabric (SKU#9900-118)  cut
H - 1 - 4.5" x 5"
I - 1 - 3" x 5"

From the Grey Fabric (SKU#9900185) cut
J - 1 - 1.5" x 5"
K - 1 - 5" x 2"
L - 1 - 3.5" x 2"
M - 1 - 3.5" x 6.5"
N - 1 - 2" x 6.5"

From the White Fabric (SKU#9900-98) cut
O - 1 - 1.5" x 2"
P - 1 - 1.5" x 6.5"

From the Cayenne Fabric (SKU#9900-256) cut
Q - 1 - 2.5" x 6.5"
R - 1 - 1" x 6.5"

From the Tea Rose Fabric (SKU#9900-89) cut
S - 1 - 1.5" x 6.5"

Assembly

Assemble fabric units Q/S/R

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of Unit G as shown

Cut it 1/4" away from the marked line. Place it on top of the assembled Q/S/R unit as shown
Stitch along the marked diagonal. Cut away corner and press open.

Now attach units F to both sides of this assembled unit.

Now, assemble the E/M/P/N/E unit as shown.

And the D/K/O/L/D unit

And the C/H/J/I/C unit

Now put all these units together as shown

Now attach the two B units to both the long sides

And then attach the A units to the top and bottom.

Your mini quilt top is ready!
