Hello and Welcome to all my old and new friends... I'm absolutely excited to start off our month long adventure...
Without much fuss, here's the FIRST
COLOR OF THE DAY
WHITE
According to Wikipedia, White is a color, the perception of which is evoked by light that stimulates all three types of color sensitive cone cells in the human eye in nearly equal amounts and with high brightness compared to the surroundings. A white visual stimulation will be void of hue and grayness.
The word white continues Old English hwÄ«t, ultimately from a Common Germanic *χwÄ«taz also reflected in OHG (h)wîz, ON hvÃtr, Goth. Æ•eits. The root is ultimately from a PIE *kwid-, surviving also in Sanskrit Å›veta "to be white or bright"[2] and perhaps Slavic svet' "light".[3] The current Icelandic word for white, hvÃtur, is very closely related to the Old English and Old Norse forms of the word. Common Germanic also had the word *blankaz ("white, bright, blinding"), borrowed into Late Latin as *blancus, which provided the source for Romance words for "white" (French blanc, Spanish blanco, Italian bianco, etc.).
White often represents purity or innocence inWestern Civilization, particularly as white clothing or objects are easy to stain. In most Western countries white is the color worn by brides at weddings. Angels are typically depicted as clothed in white robes. Healing or "good" magic is called White magic. In early film Westerns the stereotypically "good guy" wore a white hat (earning them the name "White Hats") while the "bad guy" wore black (earning them the name "Black Hats"). This has given rise to the use of the names black hat and white hat for people who abuse and counter abuse of computer systems respectively. In popular culture this idea is sometimes reversed to play on reversal of stereotypes.
In quilts, white has been used right since the beginning of quilting... A full white bed is the ultimate symbol of luxury...

Working with all white in a project makes you think more about texture and precision. I really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI love a white background, but I'll be working with it for the first time this summer. I'm making rainbow dresdens, so I think the white will make them pop. :)
ReplyDeleteWhite is a great colour to start off with! Those whole quilts show that it can stand alone and look spectacular too.
ReplyDeleteYou can see in Shruti's post what I do like about white. And the thing I don't like about white is that it gets so grubby whilst you're working with it!
ReplyDeleteIve 'recently' discovered how great white is with bright colors. Its such a clear, pure look - I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhite is perfect for pop!!! I can always depend on it to be the perfect sashing!!
ReplyDeleteI find working with white is hard for me because I like to set things in darker colors. However, it does add the 'set off' to a print that does have white in it when needed.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing I like about white? hmm, probably that you can dye it another colour! Actually, I do enjoy using white or snow as a background to really shock the eyes into loving colour even more.
ReplyDeleteWhite is an excellent background for bright, clear colors to shine against.. clean and crisp
