Hi there, I’m Jules from over at Relish. I love this idea of Shruti’s to show so many sewing sewing spaces. Thanks for having me Shruti and for allowing us all to share in the fabulous ideas for storage and layout that we’ve seen here these past few weeks.

I’m here today to show my scrap system storage. Until the beginning of this year, I had absolutely no system at all. Fabric was strewn from one end of the house to the other in bags, boxes, piled high on the cutting table, you name it. I was really tired of it as it made creativity difficult and expensive – I could never see what I had so inspiration did not take hold too often.

Then, I managed to convince my family that I needed a sewing room all of my own! And I got it!!!

I decided to sort my fabrics primarily by colour so I bought enough plastic tubs to hold these. I now have tubs for Pink, Red, Purple, Blue, Green Yellow, Orange and neutrals (gray, black, white). However, not all my fabrics could claim a particular colour, such as large florals and I also wanted to keep some ‘collections’ together. So I also sorted the 1930’s reproductions, Heather Ross Munki Munki, large florals and novelty prints into their own tubs.

I laid out all my fabric on my table with and began by just putting colours in boxes. I also had a bag marked for Project Linus where I could place quality fabrics that I just could not see a use for anymore.

And this is what I ended up with.

I left this set of shelves exclusively for quilt cottons however, in addition to quilting fabrics, I also have many wools, silks and other fabrics I have bought by the metre (yard) and have found at garage sales and church/school fetes. So, what to do with these?

I’m not really a matchy-matchy person so I find stacking fabric by colour to be more than a little difficult. In the end, I just placed them all in a few nooks of another bookshelf in as best an order as I could – browns, blues, yellow/mustards/ reds together but not perfectly so. A bit like the stacks of yardage above.

The best bit about being sorted? I can make a project in an evening after my babes are in bed without much effort at all – all from scraps!
