Why 13 Woodhouse Road?

Hi!!!

The name of my blog is 13 Woodhouse Road.

Have you ever wondered why I named it so?

Well, I actually happen to stay at this address, though it is the old address and ceased to be used since independence. But it gives a very distinct feel and has a good sound to it.

I had no idea that this was the old address of the home where we stayed. I found it out a month or so after my marriage (way back in 2005) when I was going through the telephone book. On a whim I decided to look up our home number in it and found this address. My father-in-law informed me that the area that we stay in was known as the Woodhouse extension and ours was the 13th plot here so - 13, Woodhouse Road.

When I started quilting, I was very new and did not want to stand out of the crowd. The world expects color, intricacy, skill, beauty and culture when they hear the world India. So if my blog name suggested I was an Indian quilter, people would have come here looking for those things and not found them here at all. I just wanted to quietly blend in. The quilting blogger world was filled with mostly American and few Australian, Canadian and New Zealand quilters. Indian quilters were very few. I was looking for a name that did not say Indian but still was me. That is when I remembered the conversation with my father-in-law and decided to name my blog

13 Woodhouse Road

  1. I can understand that feeling, as I felt the same. I think though that it might mean that we have stereotypes about what types of quilts Indian quilters should make. Instead, by doing what we want, and showing what we do make, then we will be breaking those stereotypes.

Thank you for your comments... I try to reply to all of them personally, but sometimes life is just too fast to do that... But I love hearing from you...
